The Walther Schücking Institute for International Law at the University of Kiel, Germany, seeks a

Teaching Associate / Lecturer (part time)

starting 1 February 2022 for a permanent contract.

The regular work schedule corresponds to a half-time position (currently 19.35 hours per week). Salary and benefits are determined according to the provisions of the current wage agreement applicable to remuneration group 13 TV-L. The teaching associate / lecturer shall solely be assigned to teaching (in German and, if necessary in English). The teaching obligation consists of 6 contact hours per week per semester.

The job holder will contribute to the long-term strengthening and securing of interdisciplinary and international teaching in the field of Public International Law and European Union Law. Teaching assignments will include the following:

  • Introduction to Legal Thinking and Method (in German),
  • Legal Writing (in German),
  • Introduction to German Law (in German and, if necessary, English),
  • Lectures in special areas of Public International Law and/or European Union law (in German or English)


These classes are conceived predominantly for students of the German interdisciplinary Master Programme International Politics and International Law (IPIR), for the Erasmus Programme and the LL.M. Programme.

In addition, the teaching associate / lecturer will be responsible for coordinating and mentoring activities within the IPIR programme.

Employment qualifications:

  • First Examination in Law, First State Examination or Second State Examination in Law in Germany with a final grade of at least “satisfactory” (“befriedigend”), or a comparable foreign legal qualification (e.g. Master of Laws or J.D. with an equivalent grade)
  • a PhD (the PhD certificate should be submitted together with the application; it has to be submitted before the start of the contract; in any case, the assessment of the PhD thesis must be finalized at the time of submitting the application)
  • working knowledge of German Law,
  • profound knowledge of Public International Law, and European Union Law,
  • excellent knowledge of written and spoken German, good knowledge of written and spoken English
  • teaching experience is expressly welcome, preferably in interdisciplinary (especially, with political science) and international teaching, as well as experience in legal writing, ideally evidenced by prior publications.
